Retired Books

When I first began writing for Maztica Alive!, I tried my hand at the third edition - a system I didn't have the strongest grip on.  However, I have been told by quite a few folks now that they appreciated these early efforts and even though I do not consider these "canon" any longer, I will happily share them here.

Many of these books have been updated in full or among a collection of newer products.  Some I still have intentions to get around to updating in the future as well.

Claw and Sting - Scorpionfolk of the True World

This was the original, 3e version of MZS3 Claw and Sting.  It has been fully updated, but there might be some tidbits left over that weren't transferred to the 5e version.  .

Diamond Eyes

This story was created using multiple writers; each contributing a paragraph to an overarching story.  It was developed on this thread on the Piazza over a decade ago and while I believe there is some potential still within the story, a full fledged Maztica Alive! project would take a major rework.  This project was also one of the first to be updated to 5e, but even that requires a reworking.

 

Itla Tlayohua - Something Dark

This book was to serve as a cornucopia of ideas for the True World that weren't long enough for a supplement of their own.  Many of its ideas have been updated in other products, and some (like the Ruins of Esh Alakar adventure) may be in the future. 


Lopango - Land of the Sacred Sun

Updated and expanded greatly, this is the predecessor to LPC1 The Lopango Campaign Guide. 

Monsters of the True World - Maztica and Lopango

Before Anchorome was even a thought of mine, I tried to put together a monster manual for creatures from Maztica and Lopango.  I had also added some "island" myth inspired creatures thinking that one day, I might expand Maztica Alive! into a Carribean setting.  They are still in there while the others have all been updated to 5e and balanced far more carefully.  

Updated creatures appear in MZS1 Monsters of Maztica and LPS1 Monsters of Lopango. 

The Great Skyhome - Maztica and Spelljammer

Second to my love of Maztica and the True World has always been both Spelljammer and Planescape.  This project was my attempt to marry Maztica with Spelljammer and I still love many of its ideas.  This project was also the origin of the book MZM3 The Penguinfolk.

Of all the retired projects, this is one which is most likely to receive a post in the Workshop very soon!

For now, that is it.  There are multiple versions of these books out there somewhere on the internet in addition to a few others I can't even find anymore.  If I do, I will be sure to update the links.

Workshop: PSS2 Monsters of the Spirit World (Released 1-21-24)

There is currently something going on with Google Drive, such that images can no longer be shared into programs like GMBinder directly from the drive and this has pretty much put a hold on every one of my projects.  It's apparently a big issue and Google is working on it so I will just be patient. With that being said, I have other ways (such as using Imgur) to share images, I just don't feel like going back and replacing the dozens I already have set.  So instead, I am starting anew on a brand new project that I wasn't expecting to do. A new monster book! I am calling it Monsters of the Spirit World and it will be a "spiritual successor" (pun intended) to Morte's Planar Parade.  I want to update and create a whole new batch of creatures for the planes and terrestrial locales that haven't been seen yet in 5e anywhere.   This is a book for the True World, as they all are, but I also wanted to increase its reachability for those who have no interest in Mazti

The DMsGuild hosts each Maztica Alive! article and book and once a campaign reaches fifteen products, I like to organize them all into a singular bundle.  Here is each book organized by campaign and a tagging system I tried to model from TSR's back in earlier editions.  I us e "AN" to identify an  Anchôromé Campaign product, "MZ" to identify a  Maztica Campaign product, "LP" for Lopango, "PS" for the Planes and Stars and "TW" for additional books produced by other authors that don't necessarily fit within one of the campaigns.  The third letter of each tag really denotes the relative size and function of a product.  The letter "C" is used for campaign guides, "S" for larger supplements, such as monstrous compendiums or regional guides, "A" represents adventures and finally "M" represents articles and shorter supplements.  The system isn't perfectly defined and on occasion I have strugg

About Maztica Alive!

  In 1991, I fell in love with the Dungeons and Dragons sub-setting known as Maztica.  Found to the west of the main contin ent of  Faerûn  on th e world of Toril in the Forgotten Realms setting, Maztica was an outlier in a game that had not often explored Mesoamerican myth.  Certainly there was the odd adventure here and there (with the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan being an excellent example), but up until this point, it had never been the true focus of a setting (fans of the Empire of the Petal Throne will certainly argue this is untrue). Maztica certainly had its detractors and problems.  The Maztica trilogy of  novels in particular are seen as insensitive and in hindsight, the underpowered nature of its presented peoples were a slap in the face to what could potentially have been. The creator of the Forgotten Realms, Ed Greenwood himself, has also expressed his disappointment in a number of settings that seem to be "bolted on" to his beloved Realms - and rightfully so. Desp
